What to Do Before You Call

• Do not speak to the police. You have a Fifth Amendment right to remain silent. Use it. Politely say you want to speak with your lawyer, and stop talking.
• Do not consent to searches. Without your consent, the police usually need a warrant or probable cause.
• Do not post about your case. Anything you say on social media can be subpoenaed and used by the prosecution.
• Write down what you remember. Names of officers, times, what was said, who was present. Send it only to your lawyer.
